Perilous 572 It doesn’t seem like the time to talk about music but perhaps its exactly times like this that a critical engagement with music and politics is even more important. This week in Newcastle it’s the annual This Is Not Art festival. A conglomeration of young creative minds from across Australia converge for the National Young Writers Festival, the Student Media Conference, the digital media and copyright activism of Electrofringe, and this year Sound Summit. There’s almost 200 different hip hop and electronic acts playing live and a wealth of fine musical and political daytime sessions to stimulate your brain and your body. The immense amount of local talent performing includes Sydney’s own Pimmon, Adelaide’s splendid Surgery Records who bring a full contingent of acts with them, two massive hip hop events featuring crews from every State, and also Nasenbluten’s last ever live show for the hardcore. One group of internationals I won’t be missing are San Francisco-based hip hop collective Anticon. They not only play a show at Sound Summit but also will take several rhyming, poetry and production workshops to give people a very hands-on look at what they are about and their distinctive sound. Anticon’s Dose One has recently been in Europe working with Neotropic, Sole has a new album which he is bringing a swag of advance copies of, over here to sell only at the shows, and Jel’s production skills with the archaic SP1200 sampler will be all on show. Then there is a fantastic sampling workshop with DJ Soup and Belgian David Shea, and Mad Professor teaching his dub methodologies. www.thisisnotart.org. Sound Summit daytime registration is $33 for 5 days worth, and the night gigs are all cheap or a three day Friday/Saturday/Sunday pass can be bought in advance for $45 which gets you into everything on those nights – as many as three or four gigs each night all within walking distance of each other! After the conference over the next two weeks there will be several post-Sound Summit events in Sydney. These kick off with two nights at the Opera House Studio. Strictly limited to just 250 seats each night, Tuesday 2nd features audio-visual producer People Like Us alongside Belgium’s David Shea and a host of local improvisers, whilst Wednesday 3rd has US guitar-meets-laptop wizard Hrvatski teaming up with Anticon in an experimental mode (think cLOUDDEAD) and an improv ensemble featuring Laurence Pike from Pivot, Tony Buchen from The Hive and Nick Toth amongst others. These nights are going to be very special and offer very different performances from those involved – tickets are only available directly from the Opera House box office or website. Frigid on the 7th has laptop sounds from Pimmon and Hrvatski joined by the Fat Cat Records crew straight out of Brighton. Whilst the following Saturday on the 13th its Anticon live at the Metro – $20 presale tickets are already on sale at Next Level, the Metro, and Red Eye. Anticon here will be joined by Dase Team 5000, Reference Point, 13th Son, Macross Matrix and Blaze for a 5 hour extravaganza. No more complaining that Sydney always misses out. Yellow Peril |
