Perilous 570

Aphex Twin will soon drop his new album, a double, which has been long awaited. Titled Druqks, it has been preceded by a nice little 12” with two untitled remixes which apparently turn out to include 808 State’s ancient classic Flow Coma, and the other Box Energy. The album should be out at the end of the month, at leats on import. Creative Vibes have scored the vinyl but who knows what will happen with the CD. Expect some classic Aphex moments. Also out later in the year is the second volume of remixes from Funkstorung. Featuring a fantastic track with Anti Pop Consortium’s Beans called Salt as well as rare oddities like remixes for The Notwist and Ike Yard, Funkstorung’s trademark sound shattering effects continue. Also included is an unreleased remix of Speedy J’s proto-gabber track from way back in 1991 called Something For Your Mind – its quite amusing to hear this again, and even with the remix, how primitive it now sounds.

Over the Atlantic, San Francisco brat Kid 606 finally gets his sedate remix release out on Mille Plateaux as well as a more raucous Tigerbeat label compilation. This so-called laptop punk is nicely shredded and reduced on the PS You Love Me remix compile with Atom Heart, Matmos, Twerk, Pan American and Rechenzentrum taking the controls. Rechenzentrum also have their own new mini-release out as well, the John Peel radio sessions on Kitty Yo. A spooky blend of laptop glitch, dark digital mist and horror atmospheres, its an even more rewarding listen than their recent album. Keep an eye out for the little known Hrvatski who is on these shores soon for Sound Summit. The godfather of the US laptop scene and owner of Reckankomplex, he is probably better known for his succinct reviews that pepper the web and his employer, Forced Exposure’s web site. Hrvatski’s hilarious remix of Kid 606 with the Appletalk MC rhyming in Jamaican patois is silly but very funny and a complete contrast to his more serious treated guitar sound pieces. Catch him teaching the tricks of laptop production up in Newcastle as well as hear him talk about writing about music and opening the lid on his encyclopaedic knowledge of independent electronic music around the world.

The ever growing lineups for the Sound Summit live gigs are out and about with hip hop and electronic artists from every State playing at various events between the 26th and the 1st. Add to that a few more international names and you know where you should be over the long weekend. A limited number of presale ‘three-day gig passes’ are on sale which get you into anything on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights including all the international gigs. And don’t forget the daytime sessions . . . in fact, take the week off work. You deserve it.

It’s the final appearance of The Ollo Experience at Frigid this week, Sept 16, so drop down and wish them well on their travels of Europe. They play both floors and are joined by a live set from Pivot who were stunning at the Sydney Squarepusher show. On the 23rd everyone starts arriving in town for the glory that is Sound Summit 2001 so we’ve got a special showcase from Adelaide’s internationally renowned Surgery Records with live sets from Superscience, Thug, and Melbourne’s Pretty Boy Crossover. Expect some IDM of the highest grade.
